The Hours
[This was written for my Cinèblog -- which I'm probably going to scrap as it feels like a failed experiment, so I'm updating my regular weblog with this]
Leslie wanted to see this, and I had a passing interest in it so we went to the Whorehouse and bought it. My review follows..
First about the DVD. Contains commentary, a "Making of" featurette, trailer, and a bunch of other extra features - so you get your money's worth.
Now on to the movie. It stars Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, Meryl Streep, John C. Riley(!), blah, blah, blah. Basically a boat-load of A and B-list actors. So, needless to say, it's an excellent cast. The story revolves three generations of women whose lives are shaped and transformed by Virginia Woolf's novel Mrs. Dalloway. So, how was it? Well, it was quite good. It struck me as kind of like a chick-movie equivalent of, say, Traffic or The Godfather II. It's hard to keep several very different yet connected stories together, especially when they cross a span of nearly 70 years. The whole movie was very well put together and had a very P.T. Anderson feel throughout with its character development and direction.
So, it may come off from the previews and commercials as being a chick film, and it only being rated PG-13 means no gratuitious violence or nudity -- BUT you get plenty of chick-on-chick action, and a great disturbing story that ends on an immensely disturing note. So, guys, see it with your girlfriends. You won't be disapointed.
Highest Recommendation.
